Our Story

"It's your world, change it or someone else will." ~Gary Lew

The purpose of D.A.P. is to promote diversity and cultural awareness in all aspects of life to the students, faculty, and staff on the University campus through active engagements of active discussions on social issues and ideas. D.A.P. will serve as a resourceful bound in encouraging students and members to seek opportunities to become more culturally aware and conscious. The organization has educated students by inviting a diverse group of people together and participating in activities that not only help them to know each other in small groups but also having discussion topics as a large group. Overall the groups hope to help the campuses and workplaces realize just because you have this judgment about a particular group of people does not mean it applies to the whole group, hence stereotypes. Nevertheless, this organization has grown and progressed into a known and well-loved organization. As an organization with 1200 participants and over 650 members., they have promoted diversity and created friendships amongst each other that go beyond the timed training and meetings. The organization is led by Justin Brown, creator. This organization is one where you can come for support, and come to be better educated and aware of diversity throughout your university campus, workplace and your future. In only its third year of existence, the energy and commitment of the collective whole of its membership is amazingly strong. It has approximately 650 members meeting voluntarily coming together to discuss, play, and challenge each other on social issues, ideas, personal relationships, stereotypes, cultural identities, and so much more. The workshop presentation will showcase the driving force of D.A.P. –and will highlight activities, ideas, and personal reflection of how and why D.A.P. became so hugely popular and so important on so many levels on our campus community. Further discussion and handouts will reveal demonstrated successes and intentionally, planned strategies of developing student and cultural identity competencies. D.A.P’. members are trained as trainers to provide diversity and prejudice-reduction workshops. The integration of the D.A.P. Style and Type of Presentation This 2-hour high energy presentation incorporates very strong fundamental ideas and concepts on topics relating to diversity. Topics are presented in a new and exciting way, which allows students to actively engage in discussions on social issues and ideas. Justin’s presentation style is high energy, while demonstrating his approach in interaction amongst the participating individuals. Justin’s approach to engage students is unique: his sessions are dynamic and organized, and his enthusiasm for crowd participation motivates and encourages students to actively participate. Justin uses various sources of media in his workshops such as PowerPoint, video clips, cell phones, role playing and games to create a constructive learning environment. Students will feel comfortable, eager to participate and ready to learn more about each other and themselves. One of Justin’s most useful techniques is the “turn and talk” method. This is where he says, “Turn to your partner, friend, teammate, etc.” and students engage in the activity. He also likes to use the “call and answer” method, where he asks the audience a series of questions and they respond. The program is fun from beginning to end, and participants walk away learning useful tips, techniques and strategies to help them in their daily lives.
